Summer Is Coming To A Close...

Ahhh another summer is coming to a close. Even though the temps are still high (like the surface of the sun in some places), we are nearing the end. I haven't posted much lately. I have busy at work getting ready for Bazaar Spark in September, and brainstorming a few new collections.

Before you know it, it will be time for those Holiday shows! I love the busy time around the holidays!

A Fresh Coat of Paint Does Wonders...

When we loved into our house 7 years ago I loved the color of the dark cranberry colored dining room. However, of the past year I have started notice how dark the dining room always seemed. Even the large window didn't seem to bring in enough light.

This weekend with some time to spare I picked up the cans of paint (including primer) and jumped in. It was no small endeavor. Just getting the primer to cover that deep red was almost enough to bring tear to my eyes.

Now the room is complete and I couldn't be more pleased. The light in the room is incredible and it even looks bigger!

No matter what your crafty calling is you know that you have little bits of this and that laying around. These were treasures used in other pieces, vintage pieces picked up at the thrift shop and a jar full of mismatched buttons or beads. They sit around waiting for another chance while we continue to acquire new bits of this and that.

This year I have pledged to myself to use as many of the extras, one-offs, and interesting goodies I have picked up over the years. Making more while spending less money on new supplies. Who's with me here?

This necklace is made up of some left over chain, a few frosted glass beads and a Strawberry Quartz focal that I have had for years. I think the color of beads compliment the color of the focal.

I love me house. I love the neighborhood it's in and I love the property we have. Our house was built in the late 90's and after living here for 6 years it is time to start updating some things and repairing others. I want to make sure this house is somewhere I always want to be. That being said, 2011 will hold many small DIY projects.

Project #1 is the small guest bathroom in our upstairs hallway. When we first moved in we gave it a fresh coat of paint, but now 6 years later it's in need of so much more. It's time for the brass fixtures to go, the bulky vanity to go and and that dated light fixture...is sooo out of here.

Today we began our first DIY project. The vanity and toilet were removed and the Wainscoting came down. Next up Spackling! Good times.

Here are some pictures of our adventure so far. The first picture is the before of our little bathroom. The second is a shot after the removal of the large pieces and the last depicts my fine spackling skills.

There is no backing out now... I just signed up for a 5K. Yep, first one ever. A group of girls I work with and I decided we were all going to do do out first 5K together. The big day is Sunday, April 10th! We chose the Raleigh Rocks 5K and Half Marathon. Looks like fun....hope I make it!

I have been doing shows for 5 years now and I still don't think I have found the perfect booth display. I'm actually not sure I ever will. That however, doesn't stop me from looking for new ideas and new display pieces to add into the mix.

Today, I found and fell in love with the table cloth pictured above....aannnnnd they were on clearance!

I would like to sincerely thank all those who organized and volunteered at SparkCon this past weekend. BazaarSpark was by far, hands-down THEEEEEE best craft event I have ever done.

Not only were tents, table and chairs provided for vendors, but they were already in place upon arrival!!! There was so much to see and do and foot traffic to the area was wonderful! I had planned on setting up both Saturday and Sunday, but by the end of day on Saturday I didn't have much inventory left.

Thank you SparkCon for a wonderful experience!

A Fortunate Year

I have been very fortunate this year to not only continue to do my annual shows, but to have been accepted into some larger shows. A few years back I never would have dreamed to be accepted, but now as I become more efficient and I am able to keep an inventory up I can venture out and apply to some of the bigger shows.

BazaarSPARK is coming up in September and it looks to be such a interesting and fun event. The organizers have been super informative and just an artists/designers dream come true!

I took and leap and applied to a larger show recently and to my surprise I got in!!!!!!!!!! I did a little happy dance and then realized I have a lot of prep work to do.

The next several weeks I am going to commit myself to cutting, wiring, hammering, oxidizing, dapping, and cold connecting.

Art Mart- August

It's time for the monthly Art Mart at Skylines Cafe It's still a small vendor fair and not heavily attended. However, the artists, crafters and business owners that participate are working hard to make these monthly Marts more successful.

Part of the problem is that we live in a county where the art community isn't as supported as it is in other counties. Then there is the whole middle of summer vacation thing.

Over the past several years I have made more of an effort to shop local. I love supporting local farmers, crafters, artists, and businesses in general.

This past weekend inspired me even more to work harder at promoting and supporting my local community. I have lived in Clayton, NC only a few years, but even in this short amount of time I have noticed it's growth and the desire of it's residents to make Clayton a town that focuses on it's local business owners and that supports the arts.

So, what can you do in your community to "shop local"?

Visit your downtown or Main Street. You are likely to find some great restaurant, coffee or tea shop, yoga studio or gift shop. Try someplace new!

Need fresh produce? Visit your local farmers market. This supports your local farmers.

Looking for the perfect gift? Take a stroll through your local gift shop or visit that local craft show you keep seeing signs for. Your local artists are always wanting to connect with their community.

Craft fair #2 of the season is on Saturday! I love the week before a show. There;s something about the mad rush to get things together and packed up that just makes me happy.

The Hope Church Spring Festival will be held on Saturday the 27th from 10am to 4pm at Clayton Middle School. An added bonus for me...this venue is probably just about 1.5 miles from my house. Sweet!

Studio Wednesday

It's been a few weeks since I have been able to have Studio Wednesday. Sick children and root canal can sort of de-rail studio time. It's nice to be back and back at it.

I am still anxiously awaiting to hear if I was accepted to Spring Daze in April. Until I hear back I will be continuing to build up my inventory.

I did just hear back about the Hope Church Spring Festival. I am happy to be able to participate in that event on March 27th! I will post more details as the event gets closer!

Holly Days...

Holly Days was this past weekend at Sanderson High School in Raleigh. This was the 3rd year I have participated and it was the best show so far.

The faculty is always super organized and easy to work with. However, I am especially impressed by the students. They are always so helpful; from unloading to breaking down, to booth sitting. They work together so well and display a great sense of community. Kudos to the Holly Days volunteers!

It is a dreary day here in Clayton,NC. A great day to cook, watch movies and do crafty things.

While hubby is downstairs whipping up some homemade peanut butter fudge I am upstairs in the studio working on new things for upcoming shows.

I try to get to the flea market in Raleigh a couple times a month. It is a great place to find vintage beads, brooches etc.

However, today I found some lovely Pyrex mixing bowls. The yellow one is a little scratched up, but I still love them!

There is so much to do, yet I can't seem to focus on just one thing in order to make a bit of progress. I am dying to finish my studio, which means I need to do some serious organization and destashing. I am also doing some more brick and mortar brainstorming.

I did however, manage to get some new brooches done. These wise guys will be making their debut at the Designer's Market on July 11th!

Another month has passed, hard to believe. July will be a busy month. I have a few shows booked and some decisions to make on some larger shows.

I feel like Below 14th has evolved and I am needing to take it to the next level. I am going to try to apply to some larger, more high profile (and more expensive) shows. This is a pretty big step for me since most of these shows are juried.
